Understanding Relationship Patterns Through Systemic & Relational Therapy title

Sometimes the difficulties we experience aren't just about what is happening today—they are connected to the relationships, environments, and experiences that have shaped us throughout our lives.

You may notice yourself repeating the same relationship patterns, struggling with self-worth, finding it difficult to trust others, or reacting in ways that don't always make sense to you.

Rather than asking, "What's wrong with you?", systemic and relational therapy asks,

"What has happened to you, and how have your relationships shaped the person you have become?"

Together we explore these patterns with curiosity, compassion, and understanding, helping you make sense of your experiences so that meaningful and lasting change becomes possible.

What is Systemic & Relational Therapy?

Systemic and relational therapy recognises that we do not exist in isolation.

Every person is influenced by the relationships, families, communities, cultures, and life experiences around them.

Our beliefs about ourselves, our expectations of others, and the ways we respond emotionally often develop through these relationships.

Sometimes these patterns continue to support us.

Sometimes they begin to keep us stuck.

Therapy provides an opportunity to understand these patterns and decide which ones you want to carry forward and which ones you are ready to change.

What are Relationship Patterns?

Many of us unknowingly repeat familiar patterns in relationships.

You might find yourself:

  • Choosing emotionally unavailable partners
  • Feeling responsible for everyone else's happiness
  • Struggling to trust people
  • Fearing rejection or abandonment
  • Avoiding conflict at all costs
  • Becoming anxious when someone pulls away
  • Finding it difficult to ask for your own needs to be met
  • Feeling like you lose yourself in relationships
  • Repeating the same relationship despite promising yourself you wouldn't

These patterns often developed for understandable reasons and once served a purpose.

Understanding them is often the first step towards changing them.

Intergenerational Patterns

Sometimes the beliefs, coping strategies, and emotional responses we carry didn't begin with us.

Families often pass down patterns across generations, which i call "the living Inheritance" which will include:

  • beliefs about emotions
  • communication styles
  • conflict
  • intimacy
  • responsibility
  • shame
  • perfectionism
  • caregiving roles
  • emotional suppression

Without realising it, we can inherit ways of relating that no longer serve us.

Systemic therapy helps us understand these intergenerational patterns with compassion, allowing you to decide what you want to keep and what you want to leave behind.

Attachment and Relationships

Our earliest relationships often influence how safe we feel with other people.

If your emotional needs were not consistently met, you may now experience:

  • fear of abandonment
  • people-pleasing
  • difficulty trusting
  • emotional dependence
  • avoiding closeness
  • anxiety within relationships

Rather than viewing these as flaws, therapy explores how these responses developed and how greater emotional security can be built over time.

How I Work

As an integrative counsellor, I combine systemic thinking with Person-Centred Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Transactional Analysis, and Solution-Focused approaches.

This means we don't simply focus on managing symptoms.

Together we explore:

  • your emotional experiences
  • your relationships
  • family dynamics
  • attachment patterns
  • beliefs about yourself
  • coping strategies
  • communication patterns
  • recurring emotional themes

The aim is not to blame families or revisit the past unnecessarily, but to understand how your experiences have shaped you so that you can make more informed choices moving forward.
